Today Rosemary and I headed into Perth City to visit the Art Gallery of Western Australia to see the Egyptian Antiquites from the LOUVRE. We plan to visit Eygpt in the near future to visit the pyramids and sphinxs. So what better for us to get familiar with the history and artifacts on Egypt. One thing really amazes me is the craftmanship on the busts and artifacts that was created with natural stones ( hint, hint...ideal visits for geologists as well as there are lots of rocks to get excited about!!!) so many eons ago with primitive tools and technology. The embalming techniques and how the artifacts are preserved after all these years is amazing.
These are Canopic Jars used by the ancient Egyptian during the rituals of mummification processes. These were used as containers in which to hold the internal organs of the deceased that was going to be mummified. The ancient Egyptians before mummifying their pharaohs and dead took out the internal soft organs. These organs contained a lot of fluid and could cause the body to putrefy and decompose quickly. The jars had lids or stoppers that were shaped as the head of one of the minor funerary deities known as the Four Sons of HORUS.
The baboon-headed Hapy guarded the lungs. The human-headed Imsety was the guardian of the liver. Jackal-headed Duamutef guarded the stomach and upper intestines and falcon-headed Qebehsenuef guarded the lower intestines. Very interesting isn't it. Did I ever tell you I loved gore and horror????? If I didn't study geology, I think my next field of interest would have been forensic science or pathology.
This mummified cat on display is so cute!!!! I am not being disrespectful or anything like that. This is just a initial reaction when I saw this. Imagine having pets mummified with you to follow you to the next after-life. Mummified my three dogs?????....I don't think so......
Well I have a good time and it was very educational. I was in total awed of the craftmanship and also being in the room surrounded by all this history and to see them perserved all this time. And how lucky for us the modern society to have a chance to learn and see these all first hand. I also had my 'rocks off' by seeing the different type of rocks...diorites, limstones, sandstones, granites, jaspers and even semi precious stones such as lapis azuli, turqouise etc.....
Yes....I am very easily amused........
